About This Championship

The WWE United States Championship is a major singles title with a lineage that dates back to 1975. It originated in Jim Crockett Promotions as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship and was tied to the Mid-Atlantic territory. Harley Race became the first champion after defeating Johnny Weaver, and the title soon developed into one of the most important championships below the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

As other regional United States titles disappeared, the Mid-Atlantic version became the main United States title connected to the NWA. Champions like Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Sgt. Slaughter, Magnum T.A., Tully Blanchard, Dusty Rhodes, and Lex Luger helped define the title’s early history.

In 1991, the title continued under World Championship Wrestling as the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. It remained one of WCW’s top singles titles through the company’s national television growth, the Monday Nitro period, the New World Order years, and WCW’s final run.

Major WCW champions included Lex Luger, Sting, Rick Rude, Dustin Rhodes, Steve Austin, Vader, Ric Flair, Eddie Guerrero, Goldberg, Bret Hart, Scott Steiner, and Booker T.

After the WWF purchased WCW in 2001, the championship appeared on WWF television during the Invasion storyline as the WCW United States Championship. Booker T entered the period as champion, and the title later changed hands between names like Chris Kanyon, Tajiri, Rhyno, Kurt Angle, Edge, and Test, who were among the wrestlers connected to the title during this short period.

At Survivor Series 2001, Edge defeated Test to unify the WCW United States Championship with the WWF Intercontinental Championship, making the United States title inactive.

WWE revived the championship in 2003 as the WWE United States Championship for the SmackDown brand. Eddie Guerrero became the first champion of the revived WWE version after defeating Chris Benoit in a tournament final at Vengeance.

Since then, the title has been defended across WWE programming and has served as one of the company’s main secondary championships. Its full history connects the NWA’s Mid-Atlantic territory, Jim Crockett Promotions, WCW, the 2001 Invasion period, and WWE’s modern championship system.
