The NXT Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling championship defended in WWE’s NXT brand. WWE established the title in January 2013, when Shawn Michaels announced an eight-team tournament to crown the first champions. The title replaced the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship and became the main prize for NXT’s tag team division as the brand grew from a developmental system into a weekly wrestling program with its own roster, events, rivalries, and title history.
The first champions were British Ambition, the team of Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey. They won an inaugural tournament by defeating Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of The Wyatt Family in the final. Grey was injured early in the reign, which led to Bo Dallas stepping in as Neville’s partner for a title defense. The Wyatt Family later won the championship, giving the title its first major connection to a larger NXT faction.
Adrian Neville stayed close to the championship after that first reign. He won the title again with Corey Graves, becoming the first wrestler to hold the NXT Tag Team Championship more than once. The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) then gave the championship its first long, defining reign. The two held the titles through much of NXT’s early rise, helping establish the championship as a regular part of the brand’s identity.
As NXT’s tag team division grew, the championship became tied to some of the brand’s most important teams. The Lucha Dragons, Blake and Murphy, The Vaudevillains, The Revival, American Alpha, #DIY, and The Authors of Pain all helped shape the title during NXT’s TakeOver years.
The Revival became the first team to win the championship more than once, and their matches with American Alpha and #DIY helped make the title one of the most-watched parts of NXT’s tag team scene.
The championship also became a key part of NXT’s faction-driven period. SAnitY, The Undisputed Era, Moustache Mountain, The Viking Raiders, and The Street Profits all held the titles as NXT expanded its roster and presentation.
The Undisputed Era became one of the championship’s most closely linked groups, with different members holding the titles during the stable’s run. Moustache Mountain’s reign also connected the championship to NXT UK, which later became important to the title’s history.
The title remained active through NXT’s move to national television and later brand changes. Teams like The BroserWeights, Imperium, Breezango, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch, and MSK each held the championship during a period of roster movement and shifting team lineups.
In 2022, the NXT Tag Team Championship became part of a major title consolidation at Worlds Collide. Pretty Deadly won a four-way tag team elimination match involving teams from NXT and NXT UK. That match unified the NXT UK Tag Team Championship into the NXT Tag Team Championship, making the NXT title the continuing men’s tag team championship for the brand after NXT UK ended.
After the unification, the title continued moving through different parts of the NXT roster. The New Day brought main roster star power to the championship during their reign, while Gallus, Tony D’Angelo and Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo, Chase U, Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin, Nathan Frazer and Axiom, Hank Walker and Tank Ledger, DarkState, The Hardy Boyz, and The Vanity Project have each carried the title through later stages of NXT’s tag team division.
The championship has also reflected NXT’s growing ties to TNA. Nathan Frazer and Axiom, who held the title across two separate reigns, defended it on a TNA Impact broadcast during their second run, making it the first time a WWE championship was defended on TNA programming.
The Hardy Boyz later won the title in a winner-take-all match, becoming the first TNA-contracted wrestlers to hold a WWE championship, and Matt Hardy became the oldest champion in the title’s history in the process.
Since its creation, the NXT Tag Team Championship has followed NXT through several different versions of the brand. It has been held by early developmental teams, TakeOver-era standouts, faction-based teams, NXT UK names, main roster wrestlers, and crossover champions. The title remains the main achievement for men’s tag teams in NXT and a regular part of how the brand develops teams, builds rivalries, and introduces wrestlers to a wider WWE audience.
