After Taz had already left ECW for the WWF, he came back for a one-night return after reigning champion Mike Awesome signed with WCW and the ECW World Heavyweight Championship risked appearing on WCW programming. Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon, who was running the WWF at the time, arranged an agreement to bring Taz in, and Taz defeated Awesome to keep the title under ECW control.

ECW was building to a title situation involving Raven (the champion), but he did not appear for the show. Instead of canceling the angle, ECW booked a tag match: The Sandman and Tommy Dreamer vs. Stevie Richards and Brian Lee. Since Richards was Raven’s associate, ECW tied the ECW World Heavyweight Championship to the result, and when The Sandman pinned Richards, ECW treated it as a title change, putting the belt on Sandman.

Tito Santana forfeited the belt to Shane Douglas. During Shane Douglas’ reign, ECW entered the National Wrestling Alliance and began promoting itself as NWA Eastern Championship Wrestling.
