Jon Moxley, born Jonathan Good in Cincinnati, is an American professional wrestler known for a gritty, brawling style and an ironman schedule. He rose to national fame in WWE as Dean Ambrose, then reinvented himself in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as a violent, unflinching main eventer. He also built a strong record in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he mixed blood-and-guts fights with big match championship work.
Moxley trained in Ohio’s Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA), then spent time in Puerto Rico with the International Wrestling Association (IWA), where he held the tag titles with Hade Vansen. He had a brief WWE appearance in early 2007 and worked sparingly for Ring of Honor (ROH) through 2009.
Later that year, he joined Dragon Gate USA and stayed until early 2011. During this time, he was also rising in Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), capturing the CZW World Heavyweight Title twice, and was a part of Full Impact Pro (FIP), where he held the FIP World Heavyweight Championship until 2011.
He signed with WWE later that year, and he reached the main roster in 2012 as part of The Shield with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, a dominant trio that headlined cards across 2013 and 2014.
As a singles wrestler, Ambrose won the Money in the Bank briefcase in June 2016 and cashed it in that same night to capture the WWE Undisputed Championship. He added multiple Intercontinental reigns and two Raw Tag Team title runs with Rollins before departing WWE in 2019.
He debuted for AEW in May 2019 and quickly became one of the company’s pillars. He won the AEW World Championship at Revolution in early 2020 and carried the promotion through the pandemic era with frequent title defenses. After a short hiatus in late 2021 to enter and complete inpatient alcohol treatment, he returned and became the interim AEW World Champion in June 2022, then undisputed champion that August.
He added a third world reign in September 2022 after defeating Bryan Danielson, and a fourth in October 2024, which set the AEW record for most reigns and the longest combined days as champion. He also held the AEW International Championship in September 2023.
In NJPW, Moxley debuted in 2019 and won the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship in his first match there, later setting the title’s longest single reign. His biggest Japan milestone came in April 2024 when he defeated Tetsuya Naito at Windy City Riot to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. Naito regained the belt that summer at Forbidden Door, but Moxley’s win made him the first wrestler to ever hold world titles in the WWE, AEW, and NJPW promotions.
Moxley helped form the Blackpool Combat Club in 2022 with Bryan Danielson, Wheeler Yuta, and Claudio Castagnoli, a unit presented as ruthless, technical, with a fight-first attitude. The group later evolved into the Death Riders, with Moxley as the clear on-screen leader, often steering the faction into violent stipulations and arena-wide brawls.
He has feuded with many headliners, including Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, Eddie Kingston, CM Punk, Orange Cassidy, and Bryan Danielson. Notable AEW matches include beating Jericho at Revolution 2020 for his first AEW world title, unifying the championship by defeating CM Punk on television in August 2022, winning the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions over Danielson in September 2022, and topping Danielson again at WrestleDream 2024 to claim his fourth reign.
His style blends wild striking, crowd brawling, and submission grappling. He finishes matches with the Paradigm Shift (a lifting double underhook DDT) or the Death Rider version in Japan, and he frequently taps opponents with the Bulldog Choke.
He uses stiff clotheslines, ground-and-pound, and targeted limb work to set up those finishes. He has also worked through setbacks. He took time away in late 2021 for treatment, then returned in January 2022. He suffered a concussion in September 2023 during a match with Rey Fénix, which cut short his International title run.
Today, Moxley remains a central act in AEW programming, leading the Death Riders and headlining pay-per-views while making select appearances for NJPW. He continues to shape the modern main event style, using believable striking, an unforgiving pace, and simple, intense storytelling that connects with audiences.
