Career Summary

Adam Copeland is a Canadian professional wrestler currently signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He is widely known as Edge, the ring name he used during his long WWE career. Copeland became one of WWE’s most decorated wrestlers before joining AEW in 2023, where he continued his career under his real name.

Copeland began wrestling in the 1990s and worked on the independent scene before entering the WWF in 1998. Early in his WWF career, he joined The Brood with Christian and Gangrel, then became one-half of Edge and Christian with Christian Cage.

The team became a key part of the tag team division during the Attitude Era, especially through ladder matches and Tables, Ladders, and Chairs matches against The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz. Their matches at SummerSlam 2000 and WrestleMania X-Seven became major career landmarks for all three teams.

By the early 2000s, Copeland had started moving into singles competition while still remaining closely tied to tag team wrestling. He won the 2001 King of the Ring tournament and held major singles titles, including the Intercontinental Championship and United States Championship.

Copeland fully entered WWE’s main event scene in the mid-2000s. He won the first Money in the Bank ladder match in 2005, then cashed in the contract on John Cena in January 2006 to win his first WWE Championship. That moment started his “Ultimate Opportunist” identity.

More title reigns and major rivalries followed, including programs with Cena and The Undertaker. He also formed Rated-RKO with Randy Orton, adding another major alliance to his WWE run.

Copeland won the 2010 Royal Rumble and later held the World Heavyweight Championship, but serious neck issues forced him to retire in April 2011 while he was still champion. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012, and his in-ring career appeared to be over.

After years away, Copeland returned as a surprise entrant in the 2020 Royal Rumble. He then began a second WWE run with major programs against Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins. He won the Royal Rumble for the second time in 2021, making him one of the few wrestlers to win it in two separate decades.

In 2022, he introduced The Judgment Day before the group continued without him, setting up a move to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2023.

His AEW run quickly reconnected him with Christian Cage, turning their long history as partners into a major rivalry. He defeated Christian for the AEW TNT Championship at Worlds End in December 2023, but lost the title back the same night after an immediate second match. Their rivalry continued into 2024, and Copeland regained the TNT Championship from Christian in an “I Quit” match.

Copeland’s WWE title history includes the WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Title, Intercontinental Championship, United States Championship, and multiple tag team championships. His character shifted between an arrogant villain and a veteran fan favorite, depending on the period of his career. He also introduced The Judgment Day in 2022 before the group continued without him.

Copeland later suffered a fractured tibia during a TNT Championship defense at Double or Nothing in 2024, which kept him out of action for several months. After returning, he remained a regular veteran presence on the roster. He and Christian later reunited as Cage & Cope and won the AEW World Tag Team Championship in 2026.

Copeland’s in-ring style has mixed athletic movement, brawling, and dramatic finishing sequences, with the Spear as his best-known finishing move. He has also used the Edgecution, a lifting DDT, and the Edgecator, an inverted sharpshooter. In tag team matches, he and Christian also popularized the con-chair-to, a two-chair strike used during high-profile storylines.

Copeland’s career covers several major periods of modern wrestling. He helped define WWE’s Attitude Era tag team division, became a world champion during the company’s main event scene, returned after a career-threatening retirement, and later added another chapter in AEW. His championship record, Hall of Fame status, and ability to remain relevant across different eras have made him one of the most recognizable wrestlers of his generation.
