About This Championship

This was the same unified world title created in late 2001 (WWF Undisputed Championship), now carrying the WWE name after the company changed from WWF to WWE in May 2002. The championship’s lineage and physical belt remained unchanged during this period.

Later in 2002, as the brand split took effect and the title became exclusive to SmackDown, the “Undisputed” designation was dropped. From that point forward, the championship continued under the simpler WWE Championship name, while Raw introduced a separate World Heavyweight Championship to restore two top titles.

Ted DiBiase claimed the WWF World Heavyweight Championship through a storyline purchase. After Andre the Giant “won” the title from Hulk Hogan in the twin-referee finish on The Main Event, Andre immediately handed the belt to DiBiase as part of DiBiase’s scheme. WWF President Jack Tunney later ruled the championship could not be transferred that way, stripped it from DiBiase, and vacated the title, which led to the WrestleMania IV tournament to crown a new champion.
