About This Championship

At Vengeance 2001, Chris Jericho defeated The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on the same night to unify the WWF Championship and the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. That victory made Jericho the first Undisputed Champion and represented the end of the WWF and WCW title split.

The physical belt design reflected this merger by combining elements of both championships into a single gold-plated design. When the company changed its name from WWF to WWE in May 2002, the championship name was updated to match, but the title itself and its lineage stayed the same.

Ted DiBiase claimed the WWF World Heavyweight Championship through a storyline purchase. After Andre the Giant “won” the title from Hulk Hogan in the twin-referee finish on The Main Event, Andre immediately handed the belt to DiBiase as part of DiBiase’s scheme. WWF President Jack Tunney later ruled the championship could not be transferred that way, stripped it from DiBiase, and vacated the title, which led to the WrestleMania IV tournament to crown a new champion.
