Austin challenged Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship with Mike Tyson, ostensibly aligned with DX, serving as the outside enforcer (special guest referee). Vince McMahon backed Michaels and DX heading into the match. Austin won cleanly, and Tyson, who had quietly sided with Austin, knocked out Michaels when he got in Tyson’s face after the bell. The win launched Austin’s first WWF Championship reign and marked the true beginning of McMahon’s active on-screen campaign against him.
