About This Championship

The WWF Cruiserweight Championship was a title used by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from November 2001 until the company became WWE in May 2002. Its history came through World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship was used from 1991 to 1992 before WCW introduced a separate Cruiserweight Championship in 1996.

The WCW Cruiserweight Championship remained active when the WWF purchased WCW in March 2001 and continued on WWF programming during the Alliance storyline. Billy Kidman, X-Pac, and Tajiri each held the championship during this period, with Tajiri defeating Kidman on October 22 to begin the reign that carried the title into its WWF name.

After the Alliance storyline ended at Survivor Series on November 18, 2001, WWF dropped the WCW name and continued Tajiri’s reign as the WWF Cruiserweight Championship.

The WWF also abandoned its separate Light Heavyweight Championship during this period after several attempts to combine the two titles, leaving the Cruiserweight Championship as the championship that continued.

Tajiri remained champion into 2002 before Billy Kidman defeated him during the April 2nd SmackDown taping. Tajiri regained the championship at Backlash on April 21st, while the title became part of SmackDown during the 2002 brand extension.

The WWF name remained attached to the championship for less than six months. When the World Wrestling Federation changed its company name to World Wrestling Entertainment on May 6, 2002, Tajiri remained champion, and his reign continued without interruption as the title became the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
