About NEW

Northeast Wrestling began with Montgomery Mania ’95 at Valley Central High School in Montgomery, New York, on December 9, 1995. Its first title lineage was the NEW Light Heavyweight Championship, won by Johnny Handsome that night. The promotion settled into the New York and Connecticut independent scene during the late 1990s, using local venues and fundraiser-style events while bringing in recognizable outside names to strengthen the cards.

The company used NWA Northeast branding during its National Wrestling Alliance period, from 1998 to February 2000. During that run, its light heavyweight title became the NWA Northeast Light Heavyweight Championship. The NWA connection also placed the group inside the politics of late-1990s regional independent wrestling.

A dispute with Tony Rumble’s NWA New England over Connecticut bookings ended with a ruling against NWA Northeast and O’Brien leaving the organization. By 2000, the company was again operating under the Northeast Wrestling name.

NEW’s modern identity formed around large independent cards built for high schools, civic centers, stadiums, fairs, and baseball parks. Wrestlefest and Wrestling Under the Stars became its best-known recurring events.

The company regularly mixed local names such as Brian Anthony, Hale Collins, Keith Youngblood, Wrecking Ball Legursky, Romeo Roselli, and later KC Navarro with outside stars including Rey Mysterio, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Cody Rhodes, Kurt Angle, Kenny Omega, Rey Fénix, Jerry Lawler, Matt Riddle, Mick Foley, and the Dudley Boyz.
Its strongest measurable stretch ran through the 2010s.

Wrestling Under the Stars drew 2,500 fans at Dutchess Stadium in 2012. The 2015 Wrestling Under the Stars event in Wappingers Falls drew 3,341, the 20th Anniversary Show in Waterbury drew a sellout of 2,300, and Wrestlefest 19 drew 2,113.

In 2016, Cody Rhodes against Kurt Angle at Wrestling Under the Stars 5 drew more than 2,800. In 2017, Wrestlefest at Crosby High School drew 3,300, while stadium shows in Bristol, Wappingers Falls, and Troy stayed above or near the 2,000 range. Redemption in Poughkeepsie drew 2,700 in 2018 for Kenny Omega vs. Rey Fénix.

The COVID-19 shutdown halted NEW’s live-event model in 2020. Mike Lombardi later said revenue dropped 90 to 95 percent and website traffic dropped 80 to 85 percent during the pandemic period. NEW returned to live events in 2021 and resumed its blend of local talent, veterans, and major outside names.

NEW remains active as a regional independent promotion with occasional major cards rather than a weekly television product.
