About WWC

World Wrestling Council (WWC) began as Capitol Sports Promotions, founded on September 13, 1973, in Puerto Rico by wrestler Carlos Colón, promoter Victor Jovica, and World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWF) personality Gorilla Monsoon.

The trio saw an opportunity to establish a promotion that featured local Puerto Rican talent alongside American stars, filling a gap left by previous promotions that largely ignored homegrown wrestlers. Capitol Sports joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and quickly built a loyal following through its weekly television program, Super Estrellas de la Lucha Libre, which aired on WAPA-TV.

The promotion reached its peak during the early 1980s, selling out the 30,000 seat venue in Bayamón for 13 consecutive shows during one stretch, and top wrestlers earned between $3,000 and $5,000 per weekend.

International stars like Ric Flair, Randy Savage, Dory Funk Jr., and Bruiser Brody traveled to Puerto Rico to compete against local favorites. Carlos Colón emerged as the territory’s biggest star, engaging in legendary feuds and winning multiple championships.

Tragedy struck on July 16, 1988, when Bruiser Brody was fatally stabbed in the locker room of Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón. Fellow wrestler José González, known as Invader I, was charged with the crime but was acquitted after claiming self-defense. The incident caused lasting damage to the promotion’s reputation, and the flow of American talent slowed dramatically.

By the mid 1990s, with the NWA territorial system dismantled, the organization officially renamed itself World Wrestling Council and rebranded its regional titles as world championships. The promotion faced serious competition starting in 1999 when the International Wrestling Association (IWA) formed an alliance with the WWF and began bringing major American stars to Puerto Rico. WWC struggled financially during the early 2000s and nearly went bankrupt.

The promotion stabilized in the mid 2000s by developing new homegrown talent and eventually sending wrestlers like Carlito and Primo Colón to WWE. Hurricane Maria in 2017 forced WWC to suspend operations temporarily, but the company returned in 2018.

A brief internal crisis in 2021 saw the Colón family leave to form a competing promotion, Latin American Wrestling Entertainment, before negotiations failed and WWC resumed operations.

The promotion celebrated its 50th anniversary in June 2023 with a major event at the Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum in Bayamón. WWC continues to hold monthly events and remains Puerto Rico’s longest operating professional wrestling promotion.
