Hell in a Cell Match Number One Contender’s Match Main Event The winner became the #1 contender for the WWF Championship at Survivor Series.
Result Shawn Michaels def. The Undertaker Pinfall (30 minutes 0 seconds)

The Undertaker faced Shawn Michaels in the first Hell in a Cell Match at Badd Blood on October 5, 1997, with the winner earning a WWF Championship match at Survivor Series. Their rivalry had escalated after Michaels accidentally struck The Undertaker with a chair at SummerSlam, costing him the WWF Championship, followed by their first singles match ending without a winner at Ground Zero.

Hell in a Cell surrounded both the ring and ringside area and included a roof, preventing Michaels from simply escaping The Undertaker while also keeping D-Generation X away from the match.

The new stipulation became a major part of WWE match history, but the match also became directly connected to another rivalry when Paul Bearer brought Kane to the ring for his WWF debut. Kane attacked The Undertaker and allowed Michaels to win, beginning the long-running rivalry between The Undertaker and Kane.

Match Summary

The Undertaker controlled much of the early match, repeatedly overpowering Shawn Michaels and using the Cell to prevent him from escaping. Michaels fought back when he could and used the steel structure to create openings, but The Undertaker continued to pursue him around the ring and ringside area.

The match eventually moved outside the Cell after officials opened the door to attend to an injured cameraman. Michaels tried to escape by climbing the structure, but The Undertaker followed him onto the roof.

After they fought on top of the Cell, Michaels attempted to climb down the side. The Undertaker stepped on his hands, causing Michaels to fall from the structure and crash through an announcer’s table. Michaels was already bleeding heavily by the time The Undertaker brought him back inside the Cell.

The Undertaker continued his attack after they returned to the ring, hitting Michaels with a chokeslam from the top rope and later striking him with a steel chair. He appeared ready to finish Michaels with the Tombstone Piledriver when the lights went out.

Paul Bearer then appeared with Kane, who was making his first WWF appearance after Bearer had spent months warning The Undertaker that his presumed-dead half-brother was still alive.

Kane tore the Cell door from its hinges, entered the ring, and confronted The Undertaker. After a brief staredown, Kane struck his brother and delivered a Tombstone Piledriver before leaving with Bearer and officially beginning his rivalry with The Undertaker.

Michaels, who had been left badly injured from the match, crawled over The Undertaker and covered him for the pin. Kane’s interference gave Michaels the victory and the WWF Championship opportunity at Survivor Series.
