The Rock

The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) is a professional wrestler and actor who rose from third-generation prospect to one of WWE’s defining stars. He debuted in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, then shifted within a year to the sharper, crowd-commanding persona that made him a fixture of the Attitude Era.

He joined and then led the Nation of Domination, rose into The Corporation, and soon became the promotion’s top talker and a reliable main-event draw. He paired with Mankind as the Rock ’n’ Sock Connection, which produced comedy skits that pulled big television ratings and multiple tag team title reigns.

Across his peak years he won world titles frequently and headlined major events. He’s an six time WWF Champion, two time WWE Undisputed Champion, and a two time WCW World Heavyweight Champion from the Invasion era. He also held the WWF Intercontinental Championship twice and the WWF Tag Team Championship five times, including three reigns with his partner, Mankind.

He won the 2000 Royal Rumble and main-evented several WrestleManias against rivals like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, and John Cena, with his most prominent matches coming at WrestleMania XV and X-Seven versus Austin. He also had the “Icon vs. Icon” match at WrestleMania X8 with Hulk Hogan.

Later that year, he moved to a part-time WWE schedule, as his film career started taking off. He then left full time competition in 2004. From 2011 to 2013 he returned for select runs, highlighted by back to back WrestleMania matches with John Cena in 2012 and 2013. However, in the 2013 match, he suffered torn abdominal and adductor muscles that required surgery, which paused further matches for several years. After that he limited his WWE work to occasional appearances while focusing more on movies and business ventures.

In January 2024 he took a formal corporate role when TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of WWE and UFC, appointed him to its board of directors. As part of that agreement, he received full ownership of the trademark for the name “The Rock.”

On TV he leaned into a new “Final Boss” persona during the build to WrestleMania 40, and would officially make a return on Night 1 to team up with Roman Reigns in a tag team match against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. Today, he remains a board member at TKO, a global entertainment figure, and an on-screen presence in a part-time role.

The Rock built his presentation around presence first. He spoke with rhythm, set up catchphrases, and invited audience call-and-response, which made promos feel like events. In the ring he wrestled a direct, athletic style that mixed brawling with burst speed.

His staples include the Rock Bottom, a lifting side slam, the People’s Elbow as a crowd finisher, a sharp spinebuster, and a version of the Sharpshooter. He often saved the big theatrics for the closing stretch, which sent matches home on a high.

Outside wrestling, he built one of Hollywood’s most bankable careers, yet he continues to keep a toehold in wrestling for special occasions. If he wrestles again, recent form at WrestleMania 40 shows he can still deliver a big-match performance with heavy crowd engagement.
