Career Summary

CM Punk (Phil Brooks) is a Chicago native who built a career as a straight-edge icon, sharp talker, and big-match performer. His career started with IWA Mid-South, where he worked long, demanding bouts with rivals like Colt Cabana and Chris Hero. He grew his reputation there by carrying heavy match loads, learning to pace main events, and collecting regional titles that put him in front of passionate local crowds.

From 2002 to 2004, he appeared on NWA: Total Nonstop Action pay-per-view events, teaming with Julio Dinero under Raven in The Gathering. Those national dates gave him weekly television-style experience and sharpened his presentation.

He broke through with Ring of Honor (ROH) in the early 2000s. In June 2005, he signed a WWE contract, but he finished his scheduled ROH dates. Weeks later, he defeated Austin Aries for the ROH World Championship, which sparked the “Summer of Punk” story, where Punk teased leaving with the title.

During this time, he also held the ROH Tag Team titles with Colt Cabana as the Second City Saints.T hese runs established his blueprint, a gripping promo style mixed with stubborn defiance and detailed storytelling.

After completing his ROH commitments in 2005, Punk reported to WWE’s developmental system, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). He won the OVW Television Championship that November, captured the OVW Heavyweight Championship in May 2006, and held the OVW Southern Tag Team title with Seth Skyfire that summer. The OVW stint polished his TV timing and prepared him for a full time call up.

WWE brought Punk up to the main roster through its relaunched ECW brand in 2006. He won the ECW Championship in 2007, then claimed back-to-back Money in the Bank victories in 2008 and 2009. Those wins launched his first series of world title reigns and marked him as a reliable big match threat. He never fit the bodybuilder mold, but he made up for it with ring craft, timing, and precise, pointed promos.

Punk reached mainstream fame in 2011 with the “pipe bomb” promo, where he spoke openly about his frustrations with WWE leadership. That moment led to his classic title match with John Cena at Money in the Bank in July.

Later that year, he began a 434-day WWE Championship reign that ran to January 2013, one of the longest of the modern period, before he lost the title to The Rock at the Royal Rumble. The stretch cemented his image as a blunt speaker who challenged the system even when it created conflict.

After the 2014 Royal Rumble, he left WWE, citing health concerns, creative issues, and strained relations with management. WWE suspended him, then, according to Punk, sent termination papers on June 13, 2014, the day he married AJ Lee. Vince McMahon later called the timing an unfortunate coincidence and apologized during an interview on The Steve Austin Show.

Away from WWE, Punk tried mixed martial arts with the UFC. He debuted at UFC 203 on September 10, 2016, where Mickey Gall submitted him in the first round. His second UFC bout in 2018 against Mike Jackson was later changed to a no-contest by Illinois regulators after Jackson tested positive for marijuana.

His official MMA record shows one loss and one no-contest, but the experiment earned him respect for crossing over, even if the results didn’t match his wrestling success.

In August 2021, Punk returned to pro wrestling with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) after seven years away. He was headlining major programs and won the AEW World Championship twice in 2022, but injuries and backstage incidents stalled his momentum. After an internal investigation into a backstage altercation at All In, AEW announced on September 2, 2023, that it had terminated Punk’s contracts with cause.

He made a surprise WWE comeback at Survivor Series on November 25, 2023, in Chicago, then moved into high-profile segments and house show appearances. During the 2024 Royal Rumble, he suffered a torn right triceps and missed WrestleMania 40 as an in-ring performer, which shifted his role into promos and angles through much of that year.

However, he was able to stay on television during his recovery, reigniting a rivalry with Drew McIntyre that dominated much of 2024, including a Hell in a Cell match in October, and set up a path back to the top scene. Punk returned to main event action in 2025, headlining WrestleMania 41 in a triple threat with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.

His wrestling style favors deliberate pacing, sharp strikes, and targeted submissions. He finishes opponents with the Go to Sleep, locks them down with the Anaconda Vise, and keeps the top rope Pepsi Plunge as a rare ace. His character steers each match, from leadership roles in the Straight Edge Society and the New Nexus to pointed promos that unsettle rivals.

Those traits, together with his tense rivalries and long-form storylines, explain his footprint in the industry and explain the intensity of the reactions that follow him to every arena.
