The incident involved Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson), with Ace Steel also involved in the altercation. In response, AEW vacated the title and later set up a new match to crown the next champion.

CM Punk was scheduled to defend the title against Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door 2022, but he was pulled from the match due to a foot injury. AEW created an interim AEW World Championship and held a tournament to fill the gap, with Jon Moxley defeating Tanahashi in the tournament final at Forbidden Door to become interim champion until Punk returned.
