About This Championship

The AEW World Tag Team Championship is All Elite Wrestling’s top men’s tag team title. AEW introduced the championship in 2019 as part of its early push to build out a full tag team division, with the first champions decided through a tournament that began during the promotion’s first year of events and played out across the early episodes of Dynamite.

The title’s lineage began on October 30, 2019, when SCU’s Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky defeated the Lucha Brothers, Pentagón Jr. and Rey Fénix, in the tournament final on Dynamite in Charleston, West Virginia. That win made SCU the inaugural AEW World Tag Team Champions and gave the promotion its first official men’s tag team titleholders.

The championship was introduced as a brand-new AEW title rather than a continuation of an earlier championship, and it has carried the same name since its creation. Every reign in its history belongs to a single unbroken lineage that traces back to that first tournament.

The title’s early years saw it pass through many of the teams that shaped AEW’s tag division. Kenny Omega and “Hangman” Adam Page won the championship in January 2020, taking it aboard Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Rager at Sea cruise in one of the stranger title changes in the belt’s history.

FTR captured the title at All Out that September, and the Young Bucks followed at Full Gear, opening a 302-day reign that the Lucha Brothers finally ended in a steel cage match at All Out 2021. Jurassic Express won the championship in January 2022 on the first episode of Dynamite to air on TBS, with the 24-year-old Jungle Boy becoming the youngest champion crowned to that point.

The Young Bucks took the title back in a ladder match that June to become the first two-time champions, and Swerve In Our Glory, The Acclaimed, The Gunns, FTR, and Ricky Starks and Big Bill all added their names to the lineage across 2022 and 2023.

One of the title’s defining moments came in 2024 when Sting and Darby Allin won the championship in February, making the 64-year-old Sting the oldest wrestler to capture it up to that point.

Sting wrestled his final match at Revolution that March, retaining the title alongside Allin against the Young Bucks before retiring as champion. AEW vacated the championship that night and held a tournament to crown new titleholders, which the Young Bucks won by defeating FTR in a ladder match at Dynasty 2024 to become the first three-time champions.

The championship has been defended on Dynamite, Collision, and AEW pay-per-view events, and it has changed hands beyond AEW’s own shows as well, including at Forbidden Door, the joint event between AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

As of the current lineage, the AEW World Tag Team Championship remains active and continues as AEW’s recognized world tag team title.
