WrestleMania XL took place on April 6 and 7, 2024, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More than 120,000 fans attended across two nights, making it one of the largest live events in WWE history. It was the 40th WrestleMania, and the first under WWE’s new ownership with TKO, giving the weekend a sense of transition and importance.

The main story centered on Cody Rhodes and his mission to “finish the story” by finally defeating Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship. After coming up short at WrestleMania 39 the year before, Rhodes returned determined to win the title his father never held.

His path became even more complicated when The Rock returned and sided with The Bloodline, raising the stakes in a way that tied generations of wrestling together. This set up a two-night scenario where Rhodes and Seth Rollins would team up against Reigns and The Rock on Night One. The result of this tag team match decided whether the title match between Rhodes and Reigns on Night Two would be under “Bloodline Rules” or with The Bloodline banned from ringside.

The rest of the card was stacked with championship bouts and personal rivalries. Night one opened with one of the most anticipated matches of the weekend. Ripley had dominated Raw’s women’s division for over a year, but Becky Lynch remained the most accomplished and battle-tested star in the company. The build was about whether Ripley could prove herself against someone who had headlined WrestleMania before, or if Lynch’s grit and experience would carry her back to the top.

The tag team division was next in a chaotic six-team ladder match. The Judgment Day (Finn Bálor and Damian Priest) entered as champions, but their grip on the titles was challenged by DIY, The New Day, The Miz and R-Truth, Grayson Waller and Austin Theory, and Pete Dunne with Tyler Bate. The match was unique because both the Raw and SmackDown belts could be retrieved separately to determine the champions. It was billed as a guaranteed car crash, with every team looking to climb the ladder and prove they belonged.

Family drama carried into the next match with Dominik Mysterio continuing to feud with his father, Rey Mysterio. But this time, aligning with Santos Escobar. Andrade’s return to WWE added another layer, as he joined Rey’s side in a tag team battle that mixed generational pride, betrayal, and lucha tradition. With both factions ringside, the setup promised a heated clash that would spill beyond the ring.

The theme of family drama continued when Jey Uso finally stepped into the ring with his brother Jimmy Uso. The Bloodline storyline had torn their family apart, and this bout was promoted as brothers settling their differences on the biggest stage possible. The emotion carried as much weight as the wrestling itself, making it one of the night’s most personal matches.

The women’s division had another match, which also featured Jade Cargill making her WrestleMania debut. Teaming with Bianca Belair and Naomi against Damage CTRL, the match highlighted both Cargill’s star power and the cracks forming inside the once-dominant faction. With Bayley preparing for her title shot on Night Two against Iyo Sky, Damage CTRL’s future looked more unstable than ever.

In Night One’s co-main event, Sami Zayn stepped into the biggest opportunity of his career when he went up against Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship. Gunther’s reign had stretched to historic lengths, built on his size, power, and unmatched consistency. Zayn came in as the underdog, but also as the heart of the story. He was a man who had scratched and clawed his way back into contention. The match was framed as one of survival: could Zayn endure the champion’s onslaught long enough to prove himself worthy of dethroning one of WWE’s most dominant forces?

The main event brought the weekend’s central storyline into sharp focus when Roman Reigns and The Rock stood together against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. It was the first time Reigns and The Rock had teamed at WrestleMania, and the stipulation tied the result directly to Night Two’s main event.

If Cody and Rollins won, The Bloodline would be barred from the title match on Night Two. If they lost, the championship bout would take place under Bloodline Rules, leaving Rhodes vulnerable to the full weight of Reigns’ empire. With so much at stake, the tag team match played out like the prologue to the biggest championship bout in years.

Night Two opened with Seth Rollins defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Drew McIntyre. McIntyre had fought his way through the Elimination Chamber to earn the shot, determined to capture his WrestleMania moment in front of a packed crowd after his first reign came during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Rollins wanted to prove the new title could stand shoulder to shoulder with Roman’s. Their collision of power and resilience was made more tense with CM Punk on commentary, reminding both men that his shadow still loomed over their rivalry.

What followed was WrestleMania’s first shock of the night. When the match was over, Damian Priest finally decided to cash in his Money in the Bank contract in an attempt to take advantage of the winner. His moment underscored the unpredictable energy of the weekend, where anything could change in seconds.

From there, the night took a violent turn as Bobby Lashley, Montez Ford, and Angelo Dawkins battled The Final Testament in a Philadelphia Street Fight. With Bubba Ray Dudley as the guest referee, the match was filled with weapons and wild brawling. Both factions proved they were willing to tear each other apart to claim dominance.

Personal grudges followed when LA Knight squared off with AJ Styles. Styles had returned from injury bitter and determined to reclaim his spotlight, pointing directly at LA Knight as the man who stole it. Their feud escalated quickly, setting up a clash about pride as much as position on the card.

The United States Championship was next, with Logan Paul defending against Randy Orton and Kevin Owens. Paul brought his usual arrogance and flair for shortcuts, while Orton returned to WrestleMania with veteran focus, and Owens came in with his trademark intensity. It was a collision of three distinct styles and personalities.

The women’s division returned to the spotlight as Iyo Sky looked to defend the WWE Women’s Championship against Bayley. After winning the Royal Rumble, Bayley set her sights on her former Damage CTRL ally. Bayley’s story was about breaking away from the faction and proving she could stand on her own, while Sky wanted to show she could carry the division without anyone questioning her.

Finally, the weekend reached its climax with Roman Reigns defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes. Reigns stood as the longest-reigning champion of the modern era, carrying the weight of his family’s dynasty, and Rhodes entered with his family’s legacy behind him. It was the culmination of two years of storytelling and one of the most important chapters in WrestleMania history.
