The Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Championship was a professional wrestling tag team championship used during a brief transitional period in 2017. The title was a continuation of the TNA World Tag Team Championship, which had been established on May 13, 2007, after Total Nonstop Action Wrestling split from the National Wrestling Alliance.
That championship had been held by teams including Beer Money, Inc. (Bobby Roode and James Storm), the Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin), The Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards), and The Hardys (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy) over the course of a decade.
In January 2017, Anthem Sports & Entertainment completed its purchase of TNA. On March 2, 2017, all references to “TNA” were replaced with “Impact Wrestling,” aligning the company name with its flagship television program. As part of this corporate rebrand, all championship titles were renamed.
The TNA World Tag Team Championship became the Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Championship. The belt itself was not physically redesigned during this period, and the existing TNA-branded plates from the original 2007 design remained in use.
This era lasted only about four months. LAX, the team of Santana and Ortiz, were among the champions during this stretch and would remain a prominent force in the tag team division across multiple rebrands.
Behind the scenes, Jeff Jarrett, TNA’s original co-founder, had returned to the company in January 2017 as a consultant and was promoted to chief creative officer. His wife, Karen Jarrett, announced on the April 20, 2017, episode of Impact Wrestling that Global Force Wrestling, Jeff Jarrett’s separate promotion, had officially merged with Impact Wrestling.
On July 2, 2017, at Slammiversary XV, the title was renamed the GFW World Tag Team Championship as part of this merger, and the separate GFW Tag Team Championship from the original Global Force Wrestling promotion was unified into it at the same event.
