About This Championship

The Impact World Tag Team Championship was a professional wrestling tag team championship used by Impact Wrestling from September 2017 through January 2024. The title was a continuation of the TNA World Tag Team Championship, which had been established in May 2007 after Total Nonstop Action Wrestling split from the National Wrestling Alliance.

The championship had previously been renamed the Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Championship in March 2017 and then the GFW World Tag Team Championship in July 2017 during a short-lived merger with Global Force Wrestling. When that merger collapsed in September 2017, the title was renamed the Impact World Tag Team Championship.

This era began on September 18, 2017, when Anthem Sports & Entertainment dropped the GFW branding after Jeff Jarrett’s departure from the company. Anthem officially terminated its partnership with Jarrett and Global Force Entertainment on October 23, 2017.

Initially, the GFW logos on the tag team championship belt were covered with Impact Wrestling nameplates. A completely new belt design was introduced at the Redemption pay-per-view on April 22, 2018, featuring an oblong main plate with the Impact Wrestling logo set at a diagonal angle between the words “Tag Team” and “Champion.”

An owl design, representing Anthem Sports & Entertainment’s corporate imagery, appeared above and below the central text. The belt was originally produced with blue accent shading. In January 2020, all Impact championship belts were updated with red accent shading to match the company’s new color scheme following its move to AXS TV. The plate design itself remained the same.

The early portion of this era saw LAX (Santana and Ortiz) continue as a dominant force, holding the championship multiple times through 2018 and into 2019. The Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix) held the title in early 2019. The North, consisting of Ethan Page and Josh Alexander, established the longest single reign in the championship’s entire history at 380 days, beginning in 2019.

The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) returned for a reunion championship run in 2020. The Good Brothers (Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson) held the title during a period when Impact’s championships appeared on AEW television as part of a cross-promotional relationship. The Briscoes (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe) brought their Ring of Honor pedigree to the title during this stretch as well. ABC (Ace Austin and Chris Bey) were among the later champions during this era.

In October 2023, Impact Wrestling announced at Bound for Glory that it would rebrand back to TNA Wrestling, effective January 2024. New championship belts were produced and presented to the reigning champions, ABC, in the days leading up to Hard to Kill. On January 13, 2024, at that event, the title was officially renamed the TNA World Tag Team Championship, returning to its original name.
