AAA Cruiserweight Championship

The AAA Cruiserweight Championship was a singles championship in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) from 2009 to 2014. AAA introduced the title for its cruiserweight division, giving the promotion its own championship for lighter wrestlers rather than relying on the Mexican National championships that had previously filled a similar role.

Although cruiserweight competition was generally associated with a 105 kg (231 lb) limit, AAA didn’t consistently emphasize or enforce the cutoff in how it presented the division.

AAA began the tournament on March 20, 2009, with a 13-man Domo de la Muerte cage match in Ciudad Madero that determined both the tournament field and the first-round seeding.

Wrestlers escaped through the opening at the top of the domed cage, and the order they were able to escape set the bracket. The first wrestler out faced the 12th qualifier, the second out faced the 11th, and the remaining pairings followed the same format.

Billy Boy was the only wrestler who didn’t escape and was eliminated from the tournament, leaving 12 wrestlers to advance. Juventud Guerrera originally qualified but was later replaced by Rocky Romero after leaving AAA.

The tournament continued through elimination matches held at several AAA television tapings before Alex Koslov reached the final against Alan Stone and Xtreme Tiger. Koslov defeated both men in a three-way elimination match on May 21, 2009, in Aguascalientes to become the inaugural AAA Cruiserweight Champion.

The championship changed hands several times during its first year, including two reigns each for Koslov and Xtreme Tiger. Koslov’s second reign ended when the title was vacated after he was forced to leave AAA following a Loser Leaves AAA match.

Xtreme Tiger then won the vacant championship before Jack Evans took the title in 2010. Evans went on to record the longest reign of the championship’s original-name period. Juventud Guerrera and Daga followed, with Daga becoming the final wrestler to hold the title as the AAA Cruiserweight Championship.

AAA introduced the separate AAA Fusión Championship in late 2012 and crowned Fénix as its first champion in March 2013. For a time, the Fusión and Cruiserweight championships operated alongside each other. In June 2014, AAA announced that the two titles would be brought together at Triplemanía XXII.

The unification match took place on August 17, 2014. Daga entered as the AAA Cruiserweight Champion and Fénix held the Fusión Championship, with both titles at stake in a multi-person elimination match. El Hijo del Fantasma ended up winning the match.

The Fusión Championship was discontinued, while the Cruiserweight lineage continued under the new AAA World Cruiserweight Championship name with a new championship belt.

The AAA Cruiserweight Championship name was used from May 21, 2009 through August 17, 2014. Five wrestlers combined for seven reigns during that period, with one vacancy. Alex Koslov was the inaugural champion, Daga was the final champion under the original name, and Jack Evans recorded the longest reign before the championship was renamed.
