AAA World Cruiserweight Championship

The AAA World Cruiserweight Championship is a singles championship in Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA). The title continues the lineage of the AAA Cruiserweight Championship that was introduced in 2009. The championship is intended for AAA’s cruiserweight division; however, AAA hasn’t consistently enforced a strict weight limit and has generally used the title for wrestlers who fit its cruiserweight style.

AAA held a tournament to crown the first champion. Alex Koslov defeated Alan Stone and Xtreme Tiger in the tournament final on May 21, 2009, to become the inaugural AAA Cruiserweight Champion. Xtreme Tiger, Jack Evans, Juventud Guerrera, and Daga were among the wrestlers who later held the championship under its original name.

AAA also introduced the AAA Fusión Championship in 2012, with Fénix becoming its first champion the following year. The Fusión and Cruiserweight championships existed separately until AAA brought them together at Triplemanía XXII on August 17, 2014.

Daga entered the event as AAA Cruiserweight Champion, while Fénix held the Fusión Championship. Both titles were placed into a multi-person elimination match won by El Hijo del Fantasma.

The Fusión Championship was discontinued after the match, while the existing Cruiserweight lineage continued as the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship. AAA also introduced a different championship belt for the renamed title.

El Hijo del Fantasma held the championship through the first several years under the World Cruiserweight name.

His reign ended at Rey de Reyes on March 19, 2017, in a Winner Takes All three-way match that placed three separate AAA singles championships at stake.

Fantasma entered as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion, El Texano Jr. held the AAA Mega Championship, and Johnny Mundo entered as AAA Latin American Champion.

Mundo won the match, retaining the Latin American Championship while also winning the Mega and World Cruiserweight championships. The three championships remained separate, with each keeping its own name and lineage.

The World Cruiserweight Championship later became part of a recognition dispute involving AAA and Major League Wrestling. Laredo Kid faced MLW World Middleweight Champion Lio Rush in a champion-versus-champion match in February 2021.

Rush won, and MLW presented him as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion. AAA briefly acknowledged the result before returning to Laredo Kid as champion and continuing his reign without making an official change in its title history. As a result, Rush’s title win is not part of AAA’s recognized World Cruiserweight Championship lineage.

Laredo Kid remained the recognized champion until Fénix won the title on June 18, 2022. That reign ended on July 17, 2023, when Fénix vacated the championship after his commitments with other promotions left him unable to appear regularly for AAA.

AAA kept the title vacant until September 23, when Komander won a four-way elimination match to return the championship to active competition.

The championship entered another period of change as AAA’s relationship with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) expanded. WWE announced its acquisition of AAA in partnership with Fillip in April 2025, and completed the transaction later that year.

AAA championships began appearing more regularly alongside WWE talent and on WWE programming as the two promotions became more integrated.

By 2026, the World Cruiserweight Championship was being defended on WWE shows as well as AAA events. Championship matches took place on NXT and SmackDown, extending the title beyond AAA-branded cards while it remained part of AAA’s championship system. The belt also continued to be defended at major AAA events, including Triplemanía.
