About This Championship

The TNA World Tag Team Championship was established on May 17, 2007, following the split between Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) and the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). For five years, TNA had operated as an NWA territory and used the NWA World Tag Team Championship as its primary tag team title. That arrangement ended on May 13, 2007, when NWA Executive Director Robert Trobich announced the organization was reclaiming control of its championships. The stated reason was that NWA World Heavyweight Champion Christian Cage had refused to defend the title against wrestlers from other NWA territories.

On that same day, TNA held its Sacrifice pay-per-view, where Team 3D successfully retained the tag team championship in a three-way match against Steiner and Tomko, and LAX. Four days later, on the May 17 edition of TNA’s online podcast, TNA Today, Jeremy Borash and Jim Cornette unveiled the newly created TNA World Tag Team Championship belt and awarded it to Team 3D, making them the inaugural champions.

After Team 3D’s inaugural reign, Kurt Angle held the title with Sting as his partner in mid-2007. AJ Styles and Tomko captured the championship at Bound for Glory 2007 as part of Christian Cage’s Coalition stable. Kaz and Eric Young won the title on an episode of Impact in April 2008, but their reign lasted only about half a day, making it the shortest in the championship’s history.

Despite being a tag team championship, three wrestlers held the title individually during this period. Samoa Joe held the championship solo for an entire reign. Kurt Angle held it alone for fifteen days before Sting won a match to become his partner. And Matt Morgan claimed the title after turning on and injuring his partner, Hernandez.

The championship hit its stride from 2008 through 2012, anchored by two teams that came to define TNA tag team wrestling. Beer Money, Inc., the pairing of Bobby Roode and James Storm, held the title five times and became synonymous with the championship.

Their rivalry with the Motor City Machine Guns, the team of Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, produced some of the most celebrated tag team matches in TNA history, including a best-of-five series in 2010 that remains one of the finest extended tag team programs the promotion ever presented.

Other notable champions during this stretch included the British Invasion (Brutus Magnus and Doug Williams), the Main Event Mafia (Booker T and Scott Steiner), and Matt Morgan and Hernandez.

From 2013 to early 2017, the title changed hands repeatedly. The BroMans (Robbie E and Jessie Godderz) brought a comedic heel edge to the championship, while The Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards) matched Beer Money’s record of five championship reigns with their hard-hitting in-ring style. Decay, the horror-themed faction featuring Abyss and Crazzy Steve, added a different texture to the division.

The Hardys held the championship during their memorable “Broken” gimmick era in 2016 and early 2017, drawing mainstream attention to the title in the months before the promotion’s corporate rebrand and the eventual name change that would become the Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Championship.

The original belt design, featuring four small gold plates with globe imagery and TNA branding, remained in use for the entire decade-long run. This era represents the longest continuous chapter of the championship under a single name and established the foundation of its legacy.
