The Undertaker and Kane met again at Unforgiven 1998 in the first ever Inferno Match. After The Undertaker defeated Kane at WrestleMania XIV, Paul Bearer challenged him to another match under a stipulation connected to the fire that had been part of the brothers’ storyline history. Flames surrounded the ring during the match, and the winner had to set part of the opponent’s body on fire. Pinfall and submission were not enough to end the match.
The Undertaker and Kane fought inside a ring surrounded by flames, with the fire rising higher after major moves and impacts. Both wrestlers repeatedly tried to force the other toward the ropes while also exchanging their usual power offense in the middle of the ring.
The Undertaker connected with Old School and later survived Kane’s attempts to force him toward the fire. Kane hit a sidewalk slam and climbed to the top rope, but The Undertaker met him there and brought him down with a superplex. The Undertaker later knocked Kane over the ropes, although Kane avoided falling into the flames.
Kane attempted to leave the ringside area, but Vader appeared in the aisle and attacked him. The Undertaker then cleared the flames with a dive over the top rope onto Kane and Vader. Paul Bearer became involved afterward and struck The Undertaker with a chair, drawing The Undertaker away from Kane long enough to attack Bearer.
When The Undertaker returned to Kane, Kane attempted to use a chair. The Undertaker stopped him with a boot, sending Kane’s arm into the flames. Kane immediately ran away with his arm burning, giving The Undertaker the victory in the first Inferno Match.
