The Undertaker and Kane‘s rivalry began in 1997 when Paul Bearer introduced Kane as The Undertaker’s presumed-dead half-brother and connected his arrival to the funeral-home fire from their childhood.
Bearer presented Kane as a survivor of the fire who had returned for revenge.
Kane finally appeared at Badd Blood on October 5, entering the first Hell in a Cell Match between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, tearing the cell door from its hinges and hitting The Undertaker with a Tombstone Piledriver. Michaels then made the pin, giving Kane an immediate role in costing his brother the match.
The Undertaker initially refused to fight Kane because of their family relationship, but that changed at the 1998 Royal Rumble. During The Undertaker’s WWF Championship Casket Match against Michaels, the New Age Outlaws, Los Boricuas, and members of D-Generation X became involved.
Kane appeared to rescue his brother by clearing the attackers away, only to turn on The Undertaker and chokeslam him into the casket. Kane and Paul Bearer then locked the casket and set it on fire.
The Undertaker returned to face Kane at WrestleMania XIV, where he needed three Tombstone Piledrivers to defeat him. Kane and Bearer attacked him again afterward, keeping the rivalry active.
Their next pay-per-view match introduced the Inferno Match at Unforgiven. Vader became involved when Kane tried to leave, while Bearer also interfered against The Undertaker. The match ended when Kane’s arm caught fire, giving The Undertaker another victory.
The rivalry then became part of the WWF Championship picture involving “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The Undertaker and Austin faced Kane and Mankind inside Hell in a Cell on Raw, and The Undertaker’s involvement in Kane’s First Blood Match against Austin at King of the Ring 1998 helped Kane capture the WWF Championship. Austin and The Undertaker later defeated Kane and Mankind for the WWF Tag Team Championship at Fully Loaded.
The brothers gradually began cooperating against Austin, but their competition with each other remained. At Breakdown in September, The Undertaker and Kane simultaneously pinned Austin after a double chokeslam, leaving the WWF Championship without an undisputed holder.
They were ordered to face each other for the vacant championship at Judgment Day with Austin as special guest referee. Paul Bearer turned against Kane during the match and sided with The Undertaker, while Austin attacked The Undertaker and declared himself the winner. The official result was a no contest, and the championship remained vacant.
Their relationship continued to shift between opposition and reluctant cooperation. In 2000, they briefly joined forces, but Kane attacked The Undertaker on Raw in August and chokeslammed him through the ring. They met at SummerSlam, where their brawl ended without a winner after The Undertaker tore Kane’s mask from his face and Kane retreated.
Both later entered the WWF Championship Fatal Four Way at Unforgiven, where The Rock retained against Kane, The Undertaker, and Chris Benoit. By 2001, the brothers had reconciled and were working together regularly as the Brothers of Destruction.
However, Kane restarted the rivalry at Survivor Series 2003. The Undertaker was facing Vince McMahon in a Buried Alive Match and looked close to winning when Kane attacked him and knocked him into the grave, allowing McMahon to complete the burial. The Undertaker disappeared from television after the burial, ending the American Badass chapter of his character before his eventual return.
Kane then insisted that his brother was gone, only to be confronted over the following months by signs of The Undertaker’s return. At WrestleMania XX, Paul Bearer accompanied the returning Deadman version of The Undertaker to the ring. Kane hit a chokeslam, but The Undertaker sat up, regained control, and finished him with a Tombstone Piledriver.
Their final feud began in 2010 after The Undertaker was found incapacitated following a storyline attack over Memorial Day weekend. Kane publicly vowed to find the attacker while targeting several possible suspects. He eventually claimed that The Undertaker had identified Rey Mysterio, but Mysterio accused Kane of being responsible.
After Kane defeated Mysterio at SummerSlam, The Undertaker emerged from the casket at ringside. He confronted Kane, but Kane overpowered him and hit a Tombstone. Kane later admitted attacking his brother.
Kane was World Heavyweight Champion by the time The Undertaker confronted him, putting the title at the center of their final series. At Night of Champions, Kane survived The Undertaker’s challenge by reversing a Tombstone attempt and hitting one of his own to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
Paul Bearer returned with the urn before their Hell in a Cell rematch and initially supported The Undertaker. During the match, however, Bearer turned against him, used the urn to weaken The Undertaker, and handed it to Kane. Kane followed with a chokeslam and retained the World Heavyweight Championship.
Their final match came at Bragging Rights 2010 in a Buried Alive Match. The Undertaker appeared close to winning after applying Hell’s Gate and putting Kane into the grave, but The Nexus interfered and attacked him. Kane recovered, struck The Undertaker with the urn, and completed the burial with The Nexus’ help to retain the championship, bringing the competitive side of the rivalry to a close.
The Undertaker and Kane later reunited as the Brothers of Destruction, returning to the alliance that had repeatedly existed between their feuds. Their rivalry remained one of the longest-running stories in both men’s careers, stretching across more than a decade and moving between family conflict, betrayal, championship matches, and periods of partnership.
Kane’s debut was directly tied to The Undertaker, and their rivalry continued to follow both characters through major changes in their careers.
It included some of Kane’s earliest defining matches, multiple WWF and World Heavyweight Championship programs, The Undertaker’s transition away from and eventual return to his Deadman character, and several reunions as the Brothers of Destruction. The repeated shifts between brothers, enemies, and partners made their relationship one of the defining long-term storylines associated with both wrestlers.
