The WWF World Tag Team Championship was the continuation of the WWWF World Tag Team Championship following the promotion’s name change from the World Wide Wrestling Federation to the World Wrestling Federation in March 1979. The championship itself was not reset or replaced. It carried forward the same lineage, champions, and historical standing, with only the branding updated to match the company’s new identity.
During this period, the title remained the top tag team championship in the company and continued to be defended primarily in major Northeast venues. The style and role of the championship closely mirrored the late WWWF era, with an emphasis on physical teams, clear babyface and heel dynamics, and longer title reigns rather than frequent changes.
Teams like the Wild Samoans became closely associated with the championship during this era, helping maintain the title’s credibility as a major attraction even as singles stars often dominated promotional focus.
This version of the championship existed during a transitional period for the company, bridging the older territorial model with the more national direction that would fully take shape in the 1980s. In December 1983, the title underwent another name change as part of a broader shift in how the company presented its championships.
