Masato Tanaka is one of professional wrestling’s most enduring and respected hardcore competitors. Originally trained by Atsushi Onita in Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, Tanaka debuted in 1993 and quickly adapted to FMW’s extreme style, competing in barbed wire and explosion matches that left his body covered in scars.
His incredible toughness and fighting spirit earned him the nickname “Dangan” (Bullet), which became his calling card throughout a career spanning more than three decades.
Tanaka gained international recognition through Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in the late 1990s, where his legendary feud with Mike Awesome produced some of the most celebrated matches in ECW history.
Their bouts at Heatwave 1998 and ECW on TNN are considered defining moments of the hardcore wrestling era. In December 1999, Tanaka became the first non-American ECW World Heavyweight Champion, cementing his legacy in the promotion before its closure.
Following the demise of ECW and FMW, Tanaka reinvented himself across Japan’s major promotions. He became the inaugural NEVER Openweight Champion in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), held multiple ZERO1 World Heavyweight Championships (where he also serves as co-vice president), and found success in NOAH, DDT, and on the international independent scene with promotions like GCW.
His ability to deliver compelling matches well into his fifties is a testament to his remarkable durability and adaptability. Whether competing in hardcore brawls or technical contests, Tanaka’s combination of devastating elbow strikes, explosive power moves, and indomitable spirit has made him a revered figure across generations of wrestling fans worldwide.
