Don Muraco was one of the standout heavyweight heels of the late territorial period and early national expansion era. Born in Hawaii, he broke into wrestling in 1973 and spent years moving through major territories and international promotions before reaching his highest profile in the WWF. By the early 1980s, Muraco had developed into a rugged, believable villain with strong promos, good timing, and an in-ring style built around power offense and control of the ring.
Muraco’s biggest success came in the WWF, where he became a two-time WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion. His reigns helped establish the belt as one of the company’s most important championships. He had major storylines with Pedro Morales, Bob Backlund, Jimmy Snuka, and later crossed paths with stars such as Hulk Hogan. His feud with Snuka is still the one most closely tied to his legacy, especially because their 1983 Madison Square Garden cage match became one of the best remembered WWF matches of that era.
Outside the WWF, Muraco also held top titles in CWF and Stampede, and brought veteran credibility to early ECW, becoming a 2-time ECW Heavyweight Champion late in his active career. He retired from regular in-ring competition in 1995, though he later returned for occasional matches. Muraco was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014, reflecting the respect he earned across multiple eras of the business.
