Career Summary

Maxwell Jacob Friedman, known worldwide as MJF, is an American professional wrestler and actor who became one of the central stars of All Elite Wrestling (AEW). By his late twenties, he had already held the AEW World Championship twice, logged the longest single reign with that title, collected secondary singles and tag championships across multiple companies, and established a clearly defined on-screen identity.

He was born Maxwell Tyler Friedman on March 15, 1996, in Plainview, Long Island, New York. After finishing school, he trained at the Create A Pro Wrestling Academy under Brian Myers and Pat Buck, both of whom had experience in major American promotions.

He debuted in 2015 and used early ring names like Maxwell Jacob Feinstein and Pete Lightning before settling on Maxwell Jacob Friedman and eventually the shorter MJF.

The first years of his career unfolded mainly on the independent circuit. He wrestled for Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), where he became CZW Wired Champion in 2017 and later held the CZW World Heavyweight Championship.

He also regularly appeared in Major League Wrestling (MLW), where he became the first MLW World Middleweight Champion. He later won the MLW World Tag Team Championship with Richard Holliday as part of the Dynasty group.

As these promotions gave him more television time, he sharpened the persona he is known for today, presenting himself as arrogant, wealthy, and openly dismissive of the audience.

His path toward major national prominence moved forward when he wrestled Matt Cross on the pre-show of All Elite Wrestling’s (AEW) inaugural All In event in September 2018.

When AEW was officially formed in early 2019, Friedman signed a multi-year deal and appeared on the company’s first events. He was presented as a sharply insulting heel who claimed a superior upbringing and status. Early in his run, he aligned with Cody Rhodes, playing the role of a young protégé who claimed loyalty while hinting at self-interest.

That relationship ended in a key turning point during the Full Gear pay-per-view in November 2019 when Cody challenged Chris Jericho for the AEW World Championship, with MJF in his corner. Friedman threw in the towel on Cody’s behalf during the match, then kicked him low afterwards.

This betrayal began a heated rivalry that lasted into early 2020. The feud culminated at Revolution 2020, where MJF defeated Cody after using his Dynamite Diamond Ring as a weapon, a detail that became a recurring element in his matches.

Over the next few years, he stayed close to the top of AEW storylines. He was introduced alongside Wardlow, who served as his enforcer, and later fronted a faction called The Pinnacle with FTR, Shawn Spears, and Tully Blanchard. The Pinnacle was positioned opposite Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle, leading to multi-man matches, including the 2021 Blood and Guts match.

During this time, he also began a long rivalry with CM Punk that leaned heavily on interviews and in-ring talking segments, culminating in a dog collar match at Revolution 2022, where Punk won after a violent match that played on classic territory-style stipulations.

His first AEW World Championship reign began at Full Gear on November 19, 2022. He challenged Jon Moxley for the title after winning the Casino Ladder Match at All Out earlier in the year.

The finish to the Moxley match involved William Regal passing brass knuckles to MJF, which allowed him to secure the pinfall and become the youngest AEW World Champion in company history. Soon afterward, he unveiled a customized version of the title belt, nicknamed the Big Burberry Belt, featuring a strap patterned after his trademark scarf.

During this reign, he defended the title against a range of opponents. Notable matches included a sixty-minute Iron Man match against Bryan Danielson at Revolution 2023 and a four-way match at Double or Nothing 2023 against Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, and Jack Perry, which positioned him as the central figure of AEW’s younger main event group.

At the same time, he teamed with Adam Cole and the two won the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament and captured the ROH World Tag Team Championship at All In London in August 2023. MJF held both the AEW World Title and the ROH Tag belts until his world title reign ended at Worlds End on December 30, 2023, when Samoa Joe defeated him. By that point, his reign had lasted 406 days.

After losing the championship, Friedman spent stretches away from the main event scene and also branched out internationally. In July 2024, he won the AEW International Championship on Dynamite, later rebranded as the AEW American Championship, adding a singles midcard title to his AEW accomplishments.

In 2025, he began appearing for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico. There, he defeated Averno in August 2025 to win the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship and later lost that belt to Mistico in a title versus mask match at CMLL’s 92nd Anniversary show.

His second AEW World Championship reign began at the end of 2025. Returning from a brief hiatus, he invoked a Casino Gauntlet contract to insert himself into a scheduled AEW World title match involving Samoa Joe, “Hangman” Adam Page, and Swerve Strickland at Worlds End on December 27, 2025.

In the four-way main event, he capitalized on interference and chaos, delivered a low blow to Page, and pinned Samoa Joe with his Heatseeker piledriver to regain the championship. This victory made him a two-time AEW World Champion before turning thirty and placed him back at the top of AEW going into 2026.

Inside the ring, MJF wrestles a methodical style that mixes classic heel tactics with targeted limb work. He often focuses on the opponent’s arm to set up his Salt of the Earth Fujiwara armbar, which serves as one of his primary finishing holds.

He also uses the Heatseeker, which is a rope-assisted piledriver, along with strikes using the Dynamite Diamond Ring. His other moves include the Double Cross, a rolling cutter variation, and various eye rakes, pokes, and distraction spots that fit his heel image.

His overall presentation emphasizes money, privilege, and perceived superiority. He usually wears tailored suits and a scarf patterned like Burberry designs, and he delivers promos that insult opponents and local crowds. His catchphrase, which says he is better than his opponents and that they know it, is closely linked to his character.

His career so far illustrates how AEW has developed its own main-event talents and how a strongly defined character, combined with in-ring success, can anchor a promotion’s major stories over several years.
