The WCW Championship was the name used by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) for WCW’s world championship during the 2001 Invasion. The lineage had begun as the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in 1991 and remained active through WCW’s final Nitro on March 26, 2001, when Booker T defeated Scott Steiner to leave the company as world champion.
The WWF purchased WCW’s assets in March 2001, but Booker’s existing championship reign continued after WCW stopped operating. When Booker T appeared at King of the Ring on June 24, the WWF presented him as the WCW Champion, beginning the shortened WCW Championship name without creating a new title or a new reign. The same Big Gold Belt continued to represent the championship.
The title became one of the championships carried into the Invasion as WCW and ECW wrestlers joined together as the Alliance against the WWF.
Kurt Angle became the first WWF wrestler to win the championship when he defeated Booker during the July 24 SmackDown taping, although Booker regained it less than a week later. The championship then moved more firmly into the WWF side of the storyline when The Rock defeated Booker at SummerSlam on August 19.
Chris Jericho also held the championship during the final weeks of the Invasion before The Rock regained it on November 5. By that point, the championship was being contested by WWF wrestlers while still carrying the WCW name and Big Gold Belt.
The Alliance was defeated by the WWF in the Winner Takes All elimination match at Survivor Series on November 18, ending the group as an active part of the storyline.
The following night, the WCW name was dropped from the championship, and it became known simply as the World Championship. The Rock carried his existing reign through the change, so the WCW Championship period ended without a vacancy, a new champion, or a change to the physical belt.
