WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII will take place on December 13, 2025, in Washington, D.C., with the entire show built around John Cena’s final match. After more than two decades at the top of WWE, Cena steps into the ring for his last bout and official retirement match against the winner of The Last Time Is Now Tournament, Gunther. This matchup will be a clash of eras, putting the face of WWE’s past against one of its most dominant modern champions.

John Cena brings years of main-event experience, high-profile moments, and comebacks, while Gunther relies on punishing strikes, submissions, and steady ring control. The match will test how much Cena has left and whether his heart, experience, and connection with the crowd can withstand Gunther’s chops, powerbombs, and physical style.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes is also set to make an appearance in a champion vs. champion match against the NXT Champion, Oba Femi. It’s a rare cross-brand meeting between an established world-level star and a rising powerhouse.

Rhodes brings the polish and presence of a main-event world champion, with a legacy tied to his family name and his long road back to the top, while Oba Femi arrives with raw strength and the aura of a surging NXT force, determined to prove that his brand can produce a champion who belongs in the ring with the very best.

Even if neither title is officially at stake, the winner will have bragging rights and leaves with the clearer claim to momentum heading into the new year.

In the women’s division, Bayley will go up against Sol Ruca (NXT) in a singles match. Bayley comes in as a veteran who has carried divisions, held multiple titles, and reinvented herself across different eras in WWE, and Sol Ruca brings a high-energy, acrobatic style built around creative offense and eye-catching movement, suited to a major stage.

It will be interesting to see if Bayley can slow things down, cut off Sol’s aerial game, and remind everyone why she has been a central figure for so long.. Or maybe, Sol can turn the match into a showcase of her athleticism and resilience and push herself closer to the upper tier of the roster.

Tag team action has also been added to the card, with the World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee set to face Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater in a non-title match.

Styles and Lee enter as established champions with a mix of experience and fast-paced offense, while Evans and Slater come in as hungry, athletic rising stars looking to score a statement win that could move them into future title contention.

Throughout the night, video packages and interviews are expected to trace Cena’s path from his early days to his biggest world title moments, and as the event draws closer, additional matches are likely to be added to the card around his retirement bout and the matches already announced.

At Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII, John Cena will step into a WWE ring for the final time, putting an end to a legendary career in a highly anticipated match with Gunther. Billed as Cena’s retirement match, the bout carries extra weight after Gunther powered his way through The Last Time Is Now Tournament, defeating LA Knight in a hard-fought final to earn the right to face him.

The story around the match focuses on Cena’s legacy and resilience, meeting Gunther’s ruthless power and precision, presenting every strike and rally as one last fight for respect. Regardless of the result, the encounter serves as Cena’s farewell to the WWE Universe, closing a historic chapter while giving Gunther one of the biggest spotlights of his career.
