The AAA Latin American Championship began with Dr. Wagner Jr. carrying AAA’s side of a rivalry with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. AAA announced the new singles title in 2011, then put Wagner against TNA’s Rob Van Dam at Triplemanía XIX on June 18.
Wagner won the match and became the first champion, giving the championship an immediate connection to one of AAA’s biggest annual events and an international storyline.
L.A. Park was the first to take the title from Wagner, beating him at Guerra de Titanes in December 2011. His time as champion led to the first vacancy. When Park left AAA, the title was declared vacant on May 23, 2013. Blue Demon Jr. won it a few weeks later by defeating El Mesías at Triplemanía XXI, where Park returned after the match to hand him the belt.
Blue Demon’s reign ended without a title match. He could not attend Rey de Reyes on March 16, 2014, where he was supposed to defend against Chessman, so AAA vacated the championship. Villano IV took his place in the match, and Chessman left as champion. Chessman held the title for over a year before Psycho Clown beat him in August 2015.
The championship belt changed as new wrestlers won it. The original belt, made by All Star Championship Belts, was used in the early years. After Psycho Clown and Pentagón Jr. held the title, Johnny Mundo beat Pentagón at Triplemanía XXIV on August 28, 2016, and received a new belt design.
Mundo’s reign led to one of the most unusual moments in the championship’s history. At Rey de Reyes on March 19, 2017, he entered a three-way Winner Takes All match against AAA Mega Champion El Texano Jr. and AAA World Cruiserweight Champion El Hijo del Fantasma. Mundo won and left with all three championships. Even though he held all the belts, they stayed as separate titles with their own names and records.
El Hijo del Fantasma later won the Latin American Championship from Mundo by winning the 2017 Copa Antonio Peña battle royal. Drago beat Fantasma in December 2018 and took the title outside AAA’s usual territory. During his reign, the championship was defended at two Battle Championship Wrestling events in Australia.
Daga kept the international presence going after beating Drago at Héroes Inmortales XIII on October 19, 2019. His 553-day reign included a defense against Isaias Velazquez at Warrior Wrestling in the United States. Daga gave up the title on April 24, 2021, and Taurus won a three-way match at Rey de Reyes to become the next champion.
Taurus later put the championship on the line in another Winner Takes All match at Triplemanía XXX on June 18, 2022. He entered as Latin American Champion, while Laredo Kid brought the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship into a five-way match with Fénix, Bandido, and El Hijo del Vikingo. Fénix won both titles. Like Mundo’s three-title win in 2017, the championships stayed separate even though one wrestler held them.
Fénix held both belts until July 17, 2023, when he gave them up because his outside commitments kept him from appearing regularly for AAA. The vacant Latin American Championship was decided at Triplemanía XXXI on August 12. QT Marshall beat Pentagón Jr., Dralístico, and El Texano Jr. in a four-way match, and his win also introduced another new belt design.
Octagón Jr. beat Marshall later that year and stayed champion until El Mesías won the title in November 2024. The championship returned to the Wagner family at Triplemanía XXXIII on August 16, 2025, when El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. defeated El Mesías to win the title his father had first brought to AAA 14 years earlier. During his reign, he defended it against Dragon Lee, Ethan Page, and JD McDonagh at the WWE and AAA Worlds Collide event.
El Hijo del Vikingo beat El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. at Noche de Los Grandes on May 30, 2026, but did not have much time as champion. Within weeks, he was sidelined by a knee injury, and the championship was vacated on July 11 before Vikingo could have a real run with it. This was the fifth vacancy in the title’s history.
