The WCW Light Heavyweight Championship was a title used in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1991 to 1992. A tournament was held to crown the inaugural champion, with Richard Morton defeating Johnny Rich, Badstreet defeating Joey Maggs, and Mike Graham defeating Terrence Taylor in the quarterfinals.
Brian Pillman entered at the semifinal stage and defeated Badstreet at Clash of the Champions XVI on September 5, while Morton defeated Graham on the same show. Pillman and Morton advanced to the final at Halloween Havoc on October 27, 1991, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Pillman won to become the first WCW Light Heavyweight Champion.
Jushin Liger ended Pillman’s first reign on December 25, 1991, before Pillman regained the championship at SuperBrawl II on February 29, 1992. Scotty Flamingo and Brad Armstrong followed as champions during the summer.
Armstrong’s reign ended when an injury prevented him from defending the championship in September 1992. WCW vacated the title on September 2, 1992, at Clash of the Champions XX and announced plans for another tournament, but the tournament never took place, and the championship was abandoned.
WCW later introduced the Cruiserweight Championship in 1996 after the Light Heavyweight title had been inactive for nearly four years. WCW treated the two championships as separate titles, but after WWE purchased WCW, it later connected their histories as part of the same WWE Cruiserweight Championship lineage.
