The WCW Cruiserweight Championship was a title introduced by World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996 and used under the WCW name through 2001. The first champion was crowned on March 20, 1996, when Shinjiro Otani defeated Wild Pegasus, the masked identity used by Chris Benoit, at a New Japan Pro-Wrestling event in Nagoya, Japan.
Otani’s reign ended when Dean Malenko defeated him in May 1996, and Rey Mysterio followed by defeating Malenko in July. Over the next several years, the championship became a regular part of WCW television and pay-per-view, with wrestlers including Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Último Dragón, Juventud Guerrera, Billy Kidman, and Chavo Guerrero moving through the title picture.
The championship went through several changes during WCW’s final years. Madusa defeated Evan Karagias at Starrcade in December 1999 to become the first woman to hold the title, while Daffney also became champion in 2000.
That same year included several vacancies and unusual title changes as WCW repeatedly changed its championship structure, including a company-wide decision in April to vacate its active titles before new champions were crowned.
Shane Helms held the Cruiserweight Championship when the WWF purchased WCW in March 2001. The championship didn’t disappear with WCW and instead continued on WWF programming during the Alliance storyline, where Billy Kidman, X-Pac, and Tajiri each held the title while it was still presented under the WCW name.
After the Alliance storyline ended at Survivor Series on November 18, 2001, WWF dropped the WCW name and continued Tajiri’s reign under the WWF Cruiserweight Championship name. WWE later added the 1991–1992 WCW Light Heavyweight Championship reigns to its official Cruiserweight Championship history, connecting two championships that WCW had originally treated as separate titles.
