WWE‘s WrestleMania Backlash 2022 was the 17th Backlash event and the second to use the “WrestleMania Backlash” name. Held in May as WWE’s first major show after WrestleMania 38, it featured wrestlers from both Raw and SmackDown and centered on feuds and storylines that had carried over from the year’s biggest event.

Opening and Mid-Card Matches

The night began with Cody Rhodes meeting Seth “Freakin’” Rollins in a rematch from WrestleMania 38. Rollins had argued that he had been unprepared for Rhodes’ return and sought redemption in this second encounter.

Another early contest saw Bobby Lashley battle Omos, who had MVP in his corner. Framed as a test of sheer power, Lashley came in determined to show he could overcome the seven-foot giant after their meeting on the WrestleMania stage.

AJ Styles also faced Edge once again, this time with Damian Priest officially barred from ringside. Priest still made his presence felt when he brawled with Finn Bálor, creating chaos in and out of the ring. The turning point came when a hooded figure interfered to help Edge. The figure revealed herself as Rhea Ripley, joining forces with Edge and signaling the rise of what would become The Judgment Day.

Women’s Division

Charlotte Flair defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Ronda Rousey in an “I Quit” match. The stipulation stemmed from their controversial WrestleMania match, which ended without a decisive conclusion. Their rematch was one of the most physical contests on the card, spilling into the crowd and featuring heavy weapon use before Rousey finally forced the submission.

Mid-Card Grudge Match

In another personal feud carried over from weekly programming, Happy Corbin’s split from Madcap Moss came to a head. Their singles match gave Moss a chance to step out of Corbin’s shadow and move forward on his own, while Corbin looked to reassert himself after the partnership fell apart.

Main Event: The Bloodline vs. RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre

The main event shifted away from the originally promoted tag team title unification bout and was instead contested as a six-man tag. Roman Reigns teamed with The Usos to face Drew McIntyre and RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle).

With Paul Heyman ringside, The Bloodline aimed to continue their dominance across WWE, while McIntyre and RK-Bro worked together to halt their momentum. It was a match that wasn’t so much about immediate championship implications, but about reinforcing the ongoing battle for control between WWE’s top faction and its biggest challengers.

Rather than serving as a spectacle on its own, this event acted as a bridge, carrying WrestleMania fallout into the summer months and giving direction to the company’s top programs moving forward.
