The Sandman (James Fullington) is a brawler from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who’s best known as one of the faces of ECW’s gritty 1990s period. He started in 1989 in the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance as Mr. Sandman, then became a regular in ECW in 1992, first leaning into a surfer look before evolving into the beer-drinking, cigarette-smoking “Hardcore Icon” that defined his peak.
In ECW, he became a record five-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion, mixing wild crowd entrances with heavy use of a Singapore cane and a straightforward, weapon-based style.
His best-known feuds include Raven and Tommy Dreamer, which were major storylines that helped cement ECW’s violent, soap-opera energy in the mid-1990s.
Outside ECW, he also worked for WCW in 1998–1999 as Hak, then later appeared in XPW and NWA-TNA, where he also won the Hard 10 Tournament. He returned to national TV in WWE’s ECW revival in 2005–2007, bringing the same entrance vibe to bigger arenas.
In his later years, he shifted to occasional independent appearances and nostalgia spots, with his last match coming on October 25, 2025, and a retirement match announced for April 17, 2026, in GCW.
