Yukiko Tomoe was one of the earliest nationally prominent stars of Japanese women’s professional wrestling, emerging in the 1950s when joshi was still a niche attraction.
Her smooth, fundamentally sound style and ability to work international opponents helped her become the first Japanese woman to capture the NWA World Women’s Championship, a landmark that signaled Japanese women could succeed on the world stage.
Tomoe worked during a turbulent period marked by scandals and instability in women’s promotions, yet she became a central figure and top champion in the Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling Association.
Her 1968 victory over Fabulous Moolah in Osaka is frequently cited in historical overviews of joshi as a turning point that paved the way for later stars and the eventual boom of All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling.
