The NWA World Women’s Championship is the premier women’s title in the National Wrestling Alliance and one of the longest-running women’s championships in professional wrestling history. Originally established in 1950 when the NWA recognized Mildred Burke as its inaugural champion, the title’s lineage stretches back to 1937.
After decades of history that saw the championship pass through pioneers like June Byers and The Fabulous Moolah, survive a lineage split when the WWF purchased Moolah’s belt in 1983, and endure periods of dormancy and disputed reigns through the 1990s and 2000s, the title entered a new era in September 2016 when Jazz captured the championship in Sherman, Texas.
With her victory, the NWA retired the hexagonal belt design that had been in use since 2014, returned to the classic 1986 three-plate design, and renamed the title the NWA World Women’s Championship.
Jazz held the championship for over two and a half years before vacating it on April 22, 2019, setting the stage for a new chapter under NWA President Billy Corgan’s Lightning One era. Allysin Kay claimed the vacant title just five days later at the Crockett Cup, defeating Santana Garrett in Concord, North Carolina.
Kay’s reign established the championship as a centerpiece of NWA’s revamped weekly television program, NWA Powerrr, which launched in the fall of 2019 and gave the women’s division consistent exposure it hadn’t enjoyed in years.
Thunder Rosa ended Kay’s 272-day reign at Hard Times on January 24, 2020, in Atlanta, and quickly became one of the most visible champions in the title’s modern history. Rosa’s crossover appeal brought eyes to the NWA product during a turbulent period, as the global pandemic forced the promotion to shut down operations for eight months.
Despite this, the championship remained active through a unique cross-promotional arrangement when Serena Deeb defeated Rosa on October 27, 2020, on UWN Primetime Live. Deeb went on to defend the NWA World Women’s Championship regularly on AEW television, keeping the title relevant even while NWA programming was on hiatus.
Kamille brought the championship back to NWA soil when she defeated Deeb at When Our Shadows Fall on June 6, 2021, in Atlanta. What followed was the most dominant reign in the title’s modern era.
Kamille successfully defended against a deep list of challengers across NWA pay-per-views and Powerrr tapings, including a high-profile defense at EmPowerrr, the NWA’s inaugural all-women’s event in August 2021. Her 813-day reign came to a stunning end at the NWA 75th Anniversary Show on August 27, 2023, in St. Louis, when Kenzie Paige defeated her to become the youngest NWA World Women’s Champion in history.
Paige carried the title for nearly two years before Natalia Markova ended her reign at the NWA 77th Anniversary Show on August 16, 2025, in Huntington, New York.
