Edwin Bibby

Edwin Bibby was one of the early stars of catch‑as‑catch‑can wrestling and a key figure in the sport’s transition from regional British contests to internationally recognized championship matches. Born in 1848 in Ashton‑under‑Lyne, Lancashire, Bibby worked as a coal miner before entering the wrestling world in 1872, quickly becoming a sought‑after attraction on the English circuit.

His technical skill and toughness earned him opportunities, like performing before Queen Victoria in Prince Albert’s Court, highlighting how respected and celebrated he became in his time.

In 1879, Bibby immigrated to the United States, where the growing popularity of professional wrestling offered new opportunities. On January 19, 1881, he defeated the Scottish wrestler Duncan C. Ross in New York to claim what is today recognized as the first American Heavyweight Championship, making him the inaugural titleholder for one of the earliest major championships in American wrestling history.

He held that championship for over a year and a half before losing it to Joe Acton on August 7 1882.

Bibby’s career saw him face many of the great pioneers of his era, including Clarence Whistler, William Muldoon, and Sorakichi Matsuda. His final known match, a victory over Matsuda on October 28, 1887 in Buffalo, effectively closed a 15‑year run as a top‑level competitor.

He later became a naturalized American citizen in 1900 and lived out his remaining years in New England, passing away in 1905 and being laid to rest in Fall River, Massachusetts. Bibby’s legacy survives in historical discussions of catch wrestling as one of the sport’s earliest recognized world‑class champions.
