The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is one of the oldest and most historic names in professional wrestling, founded in 1948 by Paul “Pinkie” George along with prominent promoters like Sam Muchnick and Al Haft. At the time, wrestling in North America was split into many regional promotions, each with its own “World Champion”.
The NWA was created to bring these territories together under one officially recognized World Heavyweight Champion, which was to be a traveling champion who defended the title across all member promotions. This alliance allowed each territory to remain independent while still benefiting from talent exchanges, shared storylines, and a sense of continuity for fans.
Through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the NWA became the most powerful organization in wrestling, with its World Heavyweight Champion regarded as one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. It thrived for decades until the 1980s, when the rise of the WWF and the expansion of national television began pulling away many of its territories, leading to major changes in the wrestling landscape.
In 2017, musician and lifelong wrestling fan Billy Corgan purchased the NWA with the goal of honoring its history while modernizing the promotion. Under his leadership, the NWA shifted from a governing body of territories to operating as its own standalone promotion.
In 2019, it launched NWA Powerrr, a weekly show featuring studio-style wrestling that streams on platforms like Roku and reaches audiences in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Today, the NWA still recognizes its storied World Heavyweight Championship while also promoting other titles such as the National Heavyweight Championship, World Television Championship, and several men’s and women’s division belts.
Major events like the Crockett Cup, NWA 76, and the 77th Anniversary Show showcase the brand’s mix of tradition and modern wrestling entertainment. The NWA remains committed to its roots while continuing to give fans a product that blends classic wrestling values with fresh, contemporary storytelling.
