Hulk Hogan used his strength to control the opening exchanges and repeatedly forced Randy Savage out of the ring. When Hogan tried to follow him to the floor, Buster Douglas stopped him and established his role as the guest referee.
After returning to the ring, Savage was able to slow Hogan down by snapping his throat across the top rope and driving a knee into his back. When Hogan fell outside, Savage tried to follow with an attack from the top rope, but Douglas stopped him.
As Savage continued trying to gain control, he accidentally knocked Sensational Sherri from the apron. Sherri remained involved afterward, grabbing and choking Hogan from ringside while Savage distracted the regular referee.
After Douglas saw Sherri interfering, he ordered her backstage. With Sherri gone, Savage continued controlling Hogan with a sleeper, clothesline, and attacks from the top rope.
Savage eventually slammed Hogan and connected with the flying elbow drop, but Hogan kicked out. After surviving the elbow, Hogan began his comeback and knocked Savage to the floor.
When they returned to the ring, the regular referee was knocked down during the exchange. Hogan then hit Savage with the leg drop and covered him, but there was no referee available to count the fall.
Seeing Hogan make the cover, Douglas entered the ring and counted to three himself, allowing Hogan to retain the WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
After the match, Savage confronted Douglas and argued over the count. When Savage continued provoking him, Hogan had enough and pushed him toward Douglas, who responded with two punches that knocked Savage out.
