Frank Alvin Gotch was a famous American wrestler known as one of the sport’s first stars. He was born near Humboldt, Iowa, and began wrestling locally. In 1899, he had an important match with “Farmer” Martin Burns, who quickly defeated him but saw his potential and became his mentor.
Under Burns’ guidance, Gotch developed his strength, leverage, and wrestling technique. He later went to the Yukon, where he wrestled as “Frank Kennedy” and won the title of “Champion of the Klondike.”
When he returned to the United States, Gotch moved up the heavyweight ranks quickly. He had a rivalry with American Heavyweight Champion Tom Jenkins, trading the title back and forth with Jenkins and Fred Beell. His biggest achievement came in 1908 when he defeated the Estonian wrestler George Hackenschmidt, known as “The Russian Lion”.
With this victory, Gotch became the World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, the first American to do so in catch wrestling. He held the championship until 1913, defeating top opponents like Jenkins, Dr. B.F. Roller, and Stanislaus Zbyszko, helping to make wrestling popular across North America.
Gotch’s rematch with Hackenschmidt at Comiskey Park in 1911 attracted about 30,000 fans and set a record for ticket sales, showing how popular he was. He was known for his strong toe hold, tough fighting style, and sometimes rough tactics.
He won around 154 of his 160 documented matches before retiring as champion after his win over Georg Lurich in 1913. After retiring, Gotch briefly participated in circus challenges and returned to Iowa, where he passed away in 1917. He was later honored with a bronze statue and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame’s Legacy wing in 2016.
