Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling

Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling was a professional wrestling promotion that ran from 1954 to 1977 in southern Alabama, Mississippi, and the western Florida Panhandle. Its main base was Dothan, Alabama, and other key cities included Mobile, Pensacola, and Panama City. As part of the National Wrestling Alliance, it managed regional promotional rights for much of the central Gulf Coast.

The territory started when Nashville promoter Roy Welch bought the Mobile and Pensacola rights from Leroy McGuirk. Welch put his son, Buddy Fuller, in charge of booking, and Fuller expanded events into Mississippi and Louisiana. At first, the operation didn’t have an official name.

Lee Fields bought the territory from Fuller in December 1959 and introduced the Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling name. Fields was already a top wrestler in the area, but the Alabama Boxing and Wrestling Commission didn’t allow him to be both promoter and active champion. Running the promotion became a family effort, with his brothers Bobby and Don Fields appearing often.

The promotion set up a weekly tour with stops in Mobile, Pensacola, Dothan, Panama City, Hattiesburg, Laurel, and Gulfport. Local TV shows advertised the events with matches, interviews, and story parts. Rocky McGuire helped run things in Dothan and Panama City, and later, “Cowboy” Bob Kelly took care of organizing shows in Mobile, Pensacola, and several Mississippi cities.

The main titles in the promotion were the NWA Gulf Coast Heavyweight Championship and the NWA Gulf Coast Tag Team Championship. There were also state and city championships for Alabama, Mississippi, Mobile, Pensacola, Dothan, and Panama City.

Top wrestlers included Lee Fields, Bobby Fields, Don Fields, Bob Kelly, Ken Lucas, Mike Boyette, Rip Tyler, Eddie Sullivan, Dick Dunn, Rocket Monroe, Ron Starr, and The Wrestling Pro. Famous NWA champions like Lou Thesz, Dory Funk Jr., Jack Brisco, and Terry Funk also wrestled in the area.

The promotion declined quickly after 1976. Kelly left wrestling that year to work in real estate and spend more time with his family. Fields found it hard to run both the promotion and Mobile International Speedway at once.

The territory stopped in early December 1976 while Fields completed the sale to his cousin Ron Fuller. Shows began again in February 1977, but most of the old wrestlers were gone. Fields completed the sale to Fuller between 1977 and 1978.

Fuller’s Southeastern Championship Wrestling took over the region and its championships in 1978, running the former Gulf Coast cities as its Southern Division until 1980. The lineage continued when Southeastern became Continental Championship Wrestling in 1985, and that promotion lasted until its final show on December 6, 1989.

Several Gulf Coast championships continued under Southeastern names, and the promotion’s history survives today mostly through fan-documented records of its weekly cards and TV programs.
