Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy met in a Ladder Match on the July 22, 2002, episode of Raw with both the WWE Intercontinental Championship and WWE European Championship at stake. Van Dam entered as Intercontinental Champion, while Hardy held the European Championship, after Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff ordered the two titles to be unified.
Both wrestlers used the ladders throughout the match while trying to reach the belt above the ring. Hardy hit a Swanton Bomb onto a ladder placed across Van Dam, while Van Dam later pulled Hardy from a ladder with a sunset flip powerbomb and followed with Rolling Thunder while Hardy was lying across another ladder.
Near the end, Van Dam kicked Hardy from his ladder, then hit a Five-Star Frog Splash from the top of another ladder. Van Dam climbed back up and retrieved the championships to win the match. His victory unified the European Championship into the Intercontinental Championship and ended the European title’s active lineage.
