Unforgiven was a professional wrestling event series produced by the World Wrestling Federation and later WWE from 1998 through 2008. The first event, Unforgiven: In Your House, took place on April 26, 1998, at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina, as the 21st event in the In Your House series.
The 1998 show included the first Inferno Match, with The Undertaker defeating Kane after setting Kane’s arm on fire. The main event saw Dude Love defeat WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin by disqualification, allowing Austin to retain the championship.
Unforgiven returned in September 1999 as its own pay-per-view and became a regular September event. The series continued under the WWF name through 2001 before the 2002 event became the first Unforgiven held after the company changed its name to WWE. The 2002 card featured wrestlers from both Raw and SmackDown.
From 2003 through 2006, Unforgiven was presented as a Raw-exclusive event. That period included Goldberg defeating Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship in 2003, Triple H defeating Randy Orton for the championship in 2004, and John Cena defeating Edge in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match for the WWE Championship in Toronto in 2006.
After WWE ended brand-exclusive pay-per-views in 2007, Unforgiven featured wrestlers from Raw, SmackDown, and ECW. The 2008 event introduced the Championship Scramble Match, with separate Scramble matches held for the World Heavyweight Championship, WWE Championship, and ECW Championship.
The 2008 event was the final Unforgiven. The series ran for 11 events from 1998 through 2008, beginning as part of In Your House before continuing as its own annual pay-per-view. WWE discontinued Unforgiven in 2009, with Breaking Point taking its place on the pay-per-view schedule.
