Edge defended the WWE Championship against John Cena in Cena’s hometown of Boston after their rivalry had become increasingly personal.
Edge also entered with an additional restriction. If he were disqualified, he would lose the championship, limiting the ways Lita could openly interfere on his behalf.
Cena attacked aggressively in the opening minutes and used punches, slams and a belly-to-belly suplex, but Edge slowed him down and began controlling the pace with strikes, holds and a top-rope clothesline.
Lita eventually threw a steel chair into the ring, but Edge immediately threw it back outside rather than risk a disqualification. That gave Cena an opening to regain control.
Cena worked through his comeback offense and eventually trapped Edge in the STFU. Lita moved toward the ring as if she might interfere, but Edge stopped her and managed to reach the ropes himself.
While the referee forced Cena to release the hold, Lita slipped a pair of brass knuckles onto Edge’s hand.
The closing sequence became more chaotic as Cena again tried to put Edge away.
Lita became involved and ended up taking an FU from Cena. With the referee’s attention away from Edge, the champion struck Cena in the back of the head with the brass knuckles.
Edge hid the evidence and covered Cena for the three-count, retaining the WWE Championship through another illegal assist from Lita.
